What Are The Top Interior Design Trends for 2021?

2020 was a year like no other, and the last few months have been long and dull – but now that we’re coming into summer, it’s time to lift our spirits and make the best of the spaces around us with some of top interior design trends for 2021.

Whether you’re working remotely from home or just want a change of scenery, we’ve created this article on the 2021 trending interior design choices to provide you with some fresh ideas on how to decorate and style your home.

We’ve picked our favourite top six interior design trends for 2021, with something for everyone included.

1. Creating A Working-From-Home Heaven

With the worldwide pandemic still at large, a lot of people are designing their homes with work in mind. So many of us have had to switch to remote working so creating a quiet, dedicated working environment in their home has become a necessity.

People are installing plugs under kitchen islands and near dining tables so they can easily charge their laptops while working from home. Others are incorporating an office into their home so that they can shut out the background noise of a busy house and concentrate on work.

Homeowners are turning guest rooms into offices and even shifting a quiet corner into a dedicated workspace. Desks are becoming a more popular home furnishing feature his year along with comfortable office chairs and office lamps.

2. Rustic Vogue

Rustic Vogue

Rustic Vogue, or Sophisticated Cottagecore as it’s often called, is a design choice to keep a lookout for in 2021.

If you’re a fan of comfortable modern interiors but you like a sprinkle of rustic character then this is the right design trend for you.

It’s ideal for any home already fitted with rustic features like exposed beams and panelled walls. It also works well with dark wooden floorboards. Of course, these types of features can also be recreated with the help of an interior designer.

Rustic Vogue combines both old and new together to create the perfect mix of modern interior design and rustic finishes.

A key element to Rustic Vogue is the use of reclaimed wood. If you’re thinking about designing your home with this look then we’d suggest opting for a wood that has a grainy texture rather than one that’s perfectly finished or varnished.

3. Distant Shores & Tropical Jungles

It’s been over a year since we’ve been able to go on a nice tropical vacation. So it’s not surprising to see the Distant Shores design style crop up in our design trends for 2021. Everybody wants an exotic getaway, but the closest thing we’re going to get is a calm and relaxing living space with an adventurous theme.

The Distant Shores trend features bright tropical colours with subtle monotones and soft lemons. Leaves and florals are often used to bring the wonders of the outdoors inside. It’s a real contemporary take on the classic floral designs of the past and is assured to give you the taste of adventure.

Adding actual greenery to your home is a big feature of this design choice.

Homeowners are really creating an exotic jungle-like vibe in their homes, which isn’t only great for appearances, but it also improves the air quality of your home. The addition of plants to your living space can even help improve your mental health.

Everybody loves to see some bright greenery in a home but having plants in your living room or kitchen is even twice as awesome when you realise all the benefits they have to offer.

Along with this Distant Shore aesthetic, we’re pretty confident that there will be a rise in naval colours. Dark blues and golds complement the greenery and remind us of what adventures overseas are like.

4. Vintage Decor

Vintage decor is always trending, and this year is no different! Homeowners love vintage aesthetics. Anything antique, repurposed, salvaged, or retro people want in their homes.

The best way to give your home a modern vintage twist is to reference the vintage look instead of trying to reproduce it exactly. Use strong colours and add some of your favourite pieces but don’t overcrowd your home. With vintage, there is definitely a less-is-more rule, especially with the more vibrant colours. The key to getting the perfect retro palace is to provide plenty of contrast.

Homes with a vintage aesthetic always look great when they’ve got a few retro pieces that mean a lot to the owner. Add in a few rich fabrics and some modern lighting, and you’ll have the perfect vintage look for your home.

5. Yellow, Lots of Yellow

The hot colour of 2021 is yellow! There’s going to be an increase in the amount of yellow we see when it comes to interior designs this year. Along with some greys and dark blues, yellow seems to be a crowd favourite for 2021.

There are so many different ways you can incorporate yellow into your decor and one of the best ways we think you can incorporate yellow is with furniture.

A lot of homeowners are purchasing yellow sofas and decorating with grey or blue cushions. It’s a popular choice especially for sunroom furniture and additional kitchen furniture.

Softer shades of yellow are also being used in bedrooms and are a great choice for children’s rooms.

6. Sustainability

There is a growing interest in sustainability across the building and design industry, which is always great to see. People are buying locally more, and opting for second-hand goods where they can. 49% of consumers also think that packaging for interior design goods should be made more sustainable.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re thinking of designing with sustainability in mind.

  • Be more energy-efficient

Maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing your waste should be at the heart of sustainable interior design. This can include things like using energy-efficient lighting, buying more energy-efficient appliances, or installing double-glazed windows.

  • Keep longevity in mind

When designing your home, consider opting for well-made pieces that will last you a long time instead of ones that are cheaper but only last a couple of years.
