Backyard DIY Ideas | 6 Easy Projects To Brighten Up Your Outdoor Space

While the summers in the Lakeland might seem short, there is still plenty of time to spruce up your backyard and enjoy it. We spend a lot of time working to improve the inside of our homes and the outside is often left to the bottom of the to-do list.

But check out these super easy (and budget friendly) backyard DIY ideas to add a little zest to the exterior of your home. Trying to sell your home? Having a nicely staged backyard is just as important (and often overlooked part) to attracting potential buyers, so try doing a little sprucing up anyways, even if it’s going to be for someone else to enjoy later.

Redo Your Patio Set

Patio furniture is not cheap, let’s be honest. So tossing out an older set and replacing it with something brand new is just not in the budget for most. But if you’ve got a set that is still standing strong and just needs a facelift, consider re-doing it, instead of buying new. (This saves the wallet and the environment).

A simple fresh coat of spray paint is often enough to give your set an entire new look. Wash everything down with a pressure washer, give it a light sanding if need be and pick a new colour! If you want to take the make-over one step further, reupholster the cushions and add some new throw pillows. If you need a bit more patio furniture makeover inspiration for your backyard DIY, check out these ideas here.

Give The Deck A Facelift Or Build One

Just like your patio set, your deck is not exactly a quick, budget friendly fix. But you CAN have it looking brand new again with a bit of TLC. Sand down any old paint or pressure wash and stain it. Replace any old or broken boards and screw down any loose ones. Then, with just a couple cans of paint or stain, you can bring your deck back to life and have it looking brand new again. If your deck has stairs, try adding a railing this summer to change up the look a bit.

If your yard doesn’t already have a deck, consider putting in the time to build one. Not only does it add a great visual aesthetic to the space, having a deck will also increase the resale value of your home.

Recycle Materials and Build Your Own Outdoor Furniture

If you don’t already own a patio set, bar, coffee table or swing, consider building one out of recycled materials before heading out and buying one brand new. This super easy backyard DIY project can save you money and add a lot of character to your yard. Check out some of these really great pallet furniture ideas. You can build so many neat things out of some screws and recycled pallets.

Light It Up

Lighting is a very simple yet very effective way to spruce up an otherwise bland backyard. You can line your backyard pathway with solar lights or even wrap the trunks of your trees with white Christmas lights for a nice ambience. There are tons of different types of outdoor lighting, both solar and plug in available. Take a look at your local hardware store and add a bit of mood lighting to your new outdoor space.

Fix Up Your Gardens or Build New Ones

Gardening can be quite a chore, there is no denying it. It’s not something everyone loves either, but it truly adds a nice pop to any backyard space. If you’re not super excited about gardening and building new flower beds, just create something very low maintenance.

A garden can be as simple as a few dug up areas that you surround with rocks or wooden rail ties. Plant perennials that are low maintenance and don’t require constant attention and up keep and don’t forget the weed fabric. Adding in some sort of barrier before planting will drastically eliminate the need for weeding the garden later on.

If you’re already an avid gardener but are still looking for that little something extra to spice things up, consider building a fountain in one of your gardens. This backyard DIY can be super cheap and easy if you use recycled materials like old tires, watering cans, stones, gardening tools etc, and it can add a stunning piece to your yard.

Put In Some Extra Time For Lawn Care

Have you ever glanced over at the neighbour’s yard and thought, why does their yard look so much nicer than mine? Maybe it’s the lawn. If the grass is greener on the other side, consider upping your own lawn care game. Having a lush green lawn isn’t complicated, but it does require some time.

Start by not trimming your lawn too short and leave the grass clippings behind. This will help keep nutrients in the lawn and promote new growth. Water your grass once a week as well, but don’t over water it. In the fall, aerate the lawn to allow more oxygen and nutrients to get into the ground and try using a fall/winter fertilizer each year. Spread a little grass seed in the dead spots each spring as well to promote healthier new growth.
